Freshman Year

Summer/Fall Semester

  • When you receive your schedule, review it for errors.  If you need to make changes, please see your counselor ASAP.
  • Attend Summer Orientation Program (Late Aug.) An invitation is mailed during the summer.
  •  Review Study Skills worksheet to identify strengths and weaknesses 
  • Your counselor will meet with you individually during the first month of school
  • Explore extracurricular activities in which you would like to be involved (activities listed in student planner)
  • Prepare for mid-year exams
  • Plan Sophomore year classes, and check to make sure that you are taking a solid college preparatory program.

Spring Semester

  • Students who are performing at a high level in Honors Biology should consider registering for the SAT Subject tests.  Speak with your teacher and counselor for more information 
  • See your counselor for final review of your schedule for sophomore year (double check to ensure you are taking all courses required for graduation).  Review sequence and graduation requirements
  • Make summer plans. Consider going to camp, attending a college summer program, finding a job or going on a teen tour. Use your free time in a productive manner
  • Don't wait until the last minute to start your summer reading list
  • Consider some volunteer service

Sophomore Year

Fall Semester

  • Participate in some school activities outside the classroom
  • Sophomores may take the PSAT  (preliminary scholastic assessment test) on October 17th.  A letter will be mailed home in September.  See the counseling center secretaries for registration information. 
  • Make sure you are taking a solid college preparatory program
  • Review sequence requirements and diploma status
  • Prepare for mid-year exams

Spring Semester

  • Participate in Interest Inventory Survey
  • Complete a College/Career search using the Naviance program.  Your counselor will log you on to the system.
  • Speak with your teachers and counselor about the SAT subject tests and AP exams
  • Work hard in all your classes and prepare for final examinations
  • Make good use of summer reading list
  • Consider doing volunteer service

    Pursue leadership roles in your extracurricular activities

Spring Semester

  • Individual parent/student/counselor conferences will take place in Jan./Feb.    Come prepared with questions
  • Register for SAT Reasoning and Subject tests as well as ACT and AP exams (as necessary)
  • Request teacher letter of recommendations for college
  • Begin a filing system for college material
  • Prepare tentative list of schools to visit
  • Make appointments for interviews and/or tours

Review your graduation requirements:

  • Obtain SAT  / ACT schedules and register for appropriate tests
  • Attend college fairs/open houses Calendar
  • Check regularly for scholarship information on the NAVIANCE site
  • Parents attend financial aid night at Garden City High School
  • Students/Parents should apply for scholarships and financial aid
  • FAFSA must be filed as soon as possible after January 1st
  • Notify your counselor of all college acceptances, rejections and wait-listed status
  • Notify your counselor of all scholarships, grants and awards
  • Notify your counselor as to where your final transcript should be sent
  • Meet all deadlines to ensure your place in college
  • GRADUATION
